BreakOut West, a four-day music industry conference, three-night music festival and home of the Western Canadian Music Awards, was held in Saskatoon over the weekend, with Rooky Kamiz and Jake Vaadeland among the big winners from the province of origin.
Other big winners of the awards presented Friday night include modern country legend Corb Lund and the exuberant and energetic Miesha and the Spanks of Alberta.
BreakOut West, which has celebrated the music of Western Canada for more than two decades, is hosted in a different Western Canadian city each year. The 2024 event began Wednesday and will conclude Sunday. CBC was a sponsor and co-host of the CBC Saskatoon Showcase.
Among the Western Canadian Music Awards announced were the 2024 Special Awards recipients.
This year’s Heritage Award went to acclaimed concert presenter Zandra Kaszas. Innovative Saskatoon venue Amigos Cantina received this year’s Kevin Walters Industry Builder Award, while the 2024 Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee is groundbreaking Saskatoon rock/blues band Wide Mouth Mason.
